Earth Day Celebration at Seneca Park Zoo

Diamond Packaging celebrated Earth Day by partnering with the Seneca Park Zoo on Saturday, April 23, 2022 from 10 AM to 4 PM to help kids plant trees and seeds for butterfly gardens.

Now in its eighth year, Diamond's Earth Day partnership with the Zoo is an ideal way to educate and inspire visitors about conservation. It is also an opportunity for Diamond to discuss its industry-leading sustainability initiatives.

Diamond employees helped kids plant trees as part of the TICCIT (“Trees into Cartons, Cartons into Trees”) program, an educational outreach program for school-aged children held every year to honor Earth Day and highlight the renewability and sustainability of paper and paperboard packaging.

Children were given a Colorado blue spruce sapling and soil, and instructed how to plant the sapling in a paperboard folding carton (which biodegrades over time) supplied by Diamond.

Children were taught about the importance of recycling, including what can be recycled and how to recycle more. Diamond also promoted a free recycling coloring book download, available from the Monroe County Department of Environmental Services (DES).

Unlike plastic, paper and paperboard is recyclable, renewable, and biodegradable. About 94% of the U.S. population has access to curbside or drop-off paper recycling programs (Source: AF&PA).

Paper and paperboard is the most recyclable substrate in the market. In fact, the paper recovery rate was nearly 66% in 2020 (Source: AF&PA), and accounts for 66.5% of municipal solid waste (MSW) recovered for recycling in the U.S. (Source: EPA).

Butterfly Beltway Project

Diamond volunteers also helped children plant wildflower seeds (selected to work as habitat for native monarch butterflies) in a specially-designed, paperboard folding carton to coincide with the Seneca Park Zoo’s Butterfly Beltway conservation project.

The goal of the project is to add more gardens, inspire others to plant gardens, and reach more people about the importance of butterfly conservation.

Diamond 2022 Calendar

Diamond proudly displayed its 2022 Calendar, which celebrates the company's sustainability and conservation efforts through its partnership with the Seneca Park Zoo. Diamond has a long-standing relationship with the zoo and proudly supports the organization through donations, participation in their Environmental Innovation Awards, and annual Earth Day events.

The header features Roycroft Renaissance Master Artisan Laura Wilder’s “Animals of the Savanna” print commissioned by the Seneca Park Zoo. It commemorates the Animals of the Savanna Exhibit expansion, which features Masai giraffes, zebras, ostriches, a southern white rhino, and over a dozen other species.

Laura graciously allowed us to use this image and collaborated with us to incorporate it into the calendar design.

Seneca Park Zoo also collaborated on the design and provided photos of the animals shown in the backers.
